In what ways have you struggled in your leadership and what was your most important learning that you brought forward from those experiences?

I wanted to be liked and I forgot that what makes someone like a friend is different from what makes someone like a manager. For that reason, I struggled to give direct feedback and hold folks accountable. This caused a lack of trust amongst my team and they didn't respect me at all. By the time I learned, it was too late, and I had no future there.

I’m on the other side of this scenario.. my manager doesn’t give direct feedback nor do they hold their employees accountable for their actions. They say it in a suggestive way and hope I pick up the hint or something and acknowledges that the others messed up. All talk no action because the employees still continue their subpar work and getting rewarded for it. 🥴

Basically, I don’t trust them to be an effective manager. At all. My mental capacity reached its limit when I was basically managing my management. Unless the team dynamic changes (it won’t), maybe I’ll consider but their chances as redeeming themselves as a manager passed a long time ago.

Sorry for the long reply.

I’ve always run my teams like a family (me- mom). I will be their friend, their coach, sometimes I feel like a therapist, but I also crack down and hold them accountable. As time goes on the HR and difficult conversations get easier and as I get stronger there, I feel less moments of them taking advantage of my style.

I’d say the culture when it’s balanced can be wonderful and the majority of my old employees have become friends after they no longer report to me.

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.

But the new opportunity is too good to pass up on (huge increase to pay. No concerns on the team since ive worked with those people in the past in a different company)

So my VP at my previous company felt bad and refused to speak to me or attend my farewell after my resignation. His reason was that I somehow betrayed his trust as he had promoted me just last year (after keeping the position open for 4 months and letting me take additional work load after the previous SM left!). Does this make any sense? I mean where does this sense of entitlement or ownership over the employees come from? No wonder the company in question is kind of facing a literal exodus!

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

Need advice & perspectives: I got a verbal review from my manager saying he couldn’t see me as senior cuz I didn’t follow the design doc format he mandates from all designers. While I have been the only designer who does almost everything from design, UI asset creation, wiring up UI in Unity (I am in mobile gaming).
Also the product I’m on has been in MVP stage, things move extremely fast and design decisions changed constantly. He’s not on my team.
Am I crazy for thinking him a bad manager?
