This isn’t the problem. The problem is most U.S. children aren’t taught to think or make decisions at all. And it’s our own damn fault, a natural consequence of several factors (e.g., helicopter parenting) present today. They are taught in school to memorize or learn to pass a standardized test. Then it’s on to whatever structured and supervised after school activity. Then supervised tutoring because God forbid your kid is “average”. They are resume-building from elementary school on. The lack of free play and unstructured time is the issue. What free time they have is spent in front of a screen. Not that there’s anything wrong with the tech itself, it’s the edutainment-at-best content. They are other-directed at all times. How can you learn to make your own decisions in this environment? You cannot.

I don't think it's a either/or; both are contributing factors to the current cultural crisis.

I started my career in my hometown, a city with about 135k people. After 4 years was at the point where I buy a house or move to a bigger city (600k people), I went with the ‘big’ city option. I lived there for about 18 months then the pandemic hit. Since then I still have my apartment in the new city but have been staying with my family in my hometown 95% of the time. I realized I have no reason other than work to be in the new city. Now I’m considering moving back to my hometown. Cont..

One of the primary aims of the criminal justice reform movement is to help ex-convicts re-enter the workforce by sealing criminal records, and making it more difficult for employers to judge applicants based on criminal history. The idea is that people are redeemable and capable of reform. Yet the same movement thoroughly enjoys getting people fired and publicly shaming them for making arguments they find “offensive”. A rapist is capable of reform, but not someone who makes a dumb tweet. Got it.

I was just informed after the third round of interviews they’d like at least 5 references, two must be supervisors. My last job was a temporary remote job where I didn’t really interact with my supervisor and the jobs before that were at my family’s business (I do not speak to any of them for serious personal reasons.) Anything before that was grad school and I haven’t kept in contact with any professors from over five years ago. What should I do? 😕

Can someone discuss the pros and cons of having a gym close to work vs having a gym near home but still would have to commute there, go back home then go to work. To me it seems more convenient to just on the way to work go to the gym, shower, then go into the office.

Ps: yes, I'm in the office.
