Interviewed with an Indian guy from FAANG and I felt like the interview was more like an integration instead of interview; The interviewer never smiled (not even the beginning) throughout the interview and keeps probing my "technical skills" even though I am interviewing for Program Manager position. For many times I wanted to end the interview but out of curtesy I stayed. Does anyone else here have similar experience with Indian interviewer?

Desi interviewers are the worst! They want you to prove your resume and with non-desis it’s always been about learning about your aptitude & attitude. Those are a breeze and more relaxing, IMO!

I’ll say this as an Indian man - Indian men can be a-holes with outsized egos, esp the ones with decent corporate titles .

I’m not perfect but I try very hard, everyday, to be respectful to folks up and down the chain; it’s a basic life skill.

Thank you for doing that!

How I put it is - non Indian people interview you to understand the depth and width of your knowledge. When Indian people interview you, they’ll find the edgiest scenarios and dig text book questions from 6 feet under and ask in the interview and will try to see where they can break you.

like

Your comments are very generic. I don't think we should start stereotyping here. In general they are output oriented which is not wrong.

Interrogation?

funnylike

Based on my experience with interviewing white and Indian folks in the tech scene - FAANG plus the hot tech. I feel that Desi folks tend to be more interrogative and not trusting what I’m saying. All it takes is a ding or desi on the fence to screw the chances.

like

Similar experience @Google. I was interviewing for Compliance role final round. Desi guy joined 15 mins late, no apologies and turned it into a complete technical interview asking java scripts which was irrelevant to the role. At the end, i asked how his work is relevant to my role to which he had no answer. A-hole.

Good comeback! 👏🏼👏🏼

Having interviewed (and worked) in India as well being interviewed by both Indians and Non-Indians here in US, I would say 9/10 times the Indian guys have been more interrogative in both countries. Based on the interviewer, It has ranged from being somewhat skeptical to downright dismissive of your accomplishment. I feel it is cultural thing though I am not sure if that's how they interview white folks too.
I, on my part, have been very conscious of not being that kind of Indian interviewer and being more constructive, supportive and someone who gives folks benefit of a doubt (though I can't be a judge of myself)

I feel like sometimes desis are tougher on other desis :( I hope when I’m in a position of power I can help our people succeed when qualified of course! Too many companies are filled with non POCs.

like

Exactly P1! Thank you for paving the way for other desis!!

Naah, that’s just FAANG. I was interviewing for. Program Manager position at google and the white interviewer asked such a obscure technical question which I had to research a couple of hours post the interview to get my head around. In FAANG engineers are boss and they can do what they want. Plus they especially disdain MBA types.

like

Which FAANG company, if you wouldn’t mind divulging? G has strict standards on the questions to be asked and they’re generally tailored to the role/team which one is interviewing with.

likesmart

Second this. Seems very unlikely this is for Google. We literally strict to the script in interviews with little room to “interrogate” folks on non-relevant topics.

Agreed , Indian here and I can affirm most Indians do not know how to handle interviews. Basically most Indians fail at people skills in a professional set up. It’s a cultural issue I feel.

like

Honestly, FAANG is just full of dickwad interviewers and you shouldn’t let it get to you.

Not the kinds of companies I’d want to work at.

I think this is a fairly common experience. I had similar one too

Yeah I’ve experienced and heard of others experiencing this as well. Some sort of bias for sure.

Who said program manager doesn’t need a technical skills interview? 😂

like

I agree ... Desis make it tough

What technical skills were they probing? I agree with your assessment that desi managers are usually bad at people skills, but you'll be surprised to know how much technical knowledge is required even in a program manager role at these firms as a lot of your time would be spent working with Engineers, data scientists and PMs who have a very good understanding of the technical setup.

I when I interview, I am very surprised constantly that consultants come in to an interview for a tech firm thinking they can handle anything that is thrown at them, and don't really take the time to prep and understand the tech and products of the company.
