The National Labor Relations Act makes it illegal for companies to prevent employees from sharing information about their compensation with each other.
good to know thanks!
It’s weird. I’ve seen people fired for sharing their salary as a breach of contract
That’s illegal
I've never been told by a company that I couldn't share my salary. But if it wasn't for other people telling me then I wouldn't have known that I was getting screwed.
Yep - same thing happened to me. That’s why the clause struck me. I get why companies would rather we didn’t discuss things, but it doesn’t seem right that they can actively prohibit it.
I often tell people what I made in their shoes. It’s just good karma. But I feel weird telling people my current salary
It’s weird
Very weird and potentially illegal. Is your employer also litigating Glassdoor?
Is this USA or another country?
It’s in the US
Does it matter? Those agreements are virtually impossible to enforce.
It's illegal. But companies still use some spooky language in the contracts and NDAs... Even had a hiring manager say it to my face. It's a disgusting practice.
It’s illegal and unenforceable, but in this industry salary may not always be the best thing to mention. I was heavily advised never to mention it because I’m younger and make much more than the rest of my team (but I also manage more business).
The last thing you really want to do is have people complaining about how much you get paid.
Totally illegal. Also unenforceable, but so are a lot of the things in employment contracts, for most workers anyway.
Unsure on the legalities but i’ve signed a contract stating this exact clause 4 or 5x (most recently, yesterday!). And think it’s utterly absurd.
It’s illegal in Illinois to prevent employees from sharing salaries
