Hey, I have 4 YOE and currently a manager at PwC and have been managing teams for a little over a year now. My role mainly consists of leading teams of engineers deliver MVPs to our clients.
If I wanted to exit to Google or Facebook (Meta) what role would align for me? I was looking at engineering manager roles but unsure if that’s too senior for me.

Actually, go on short term disability for the burnout and go find something with the balance you need to continue indefinitely
Not really.. Depends which company and the company culture.. I'm at a food and beverage company and I'm very happy
I was a dir in corporate, sr mgr at PwC consulting and now exited to a sr dir in corporate. Life is soo much better. Yes there are times when you need to put in extra vs all the time in consulting. Also, the key is building is the right team culture that stays with you vs changing with different projects in consulting. Total Comp is higher/comparable. You have to work like a horse non stop for tier 1 bonus
Depends on many factors like role, company, etc.
In general, a Director role at a F500 corp strategy team can be cushy. A VP in a P&L ownership role at an underperforming public or PE/VC owned company can be quite stressful.
Hours are typically better in industry but the stress comes from ownership of actions, performance and outcome (at least for function roles). It’s a different type of stress so hard to compare.
I left PwC and now a Sr Director. It’s not stressful and I’ve never done more than 40 hours a week. 20% total comp increase.
Nice! What level were you at PwC?
It’s different kinds of stress, obviously dependent on the company.
Consulting in many ways is more predictable as the work is typically scoped and deliverables and timelines are made clear via contracts. It is stressful to sell and deliver especially in a slow economy.
Industry jobs have more accountability and responsibility because ultimately you own the business and P&L. Generally there are larger teams and more moving pieces and a significant miss often means you will get pushed out. The other issue amongst all of it is that the politics are just much worse.
Not at all. So glad to have left consulting. I just have to do “work” which is easy because of my consulting experience. And I no longer have sales targets.
I’ve worked with a lot of VPs from F500. I agree if you are managing P&L or close to CXO level then life is a bit stressful but not as much as consulting. Other VPs are just coasting
MD in industry. I work maybe 20 hours per week. An additional 10 per week listening to people complain.
But every now and then, an urgent incident happens in the middle of the night on the weekend. I get called to help resolution.
I prefer it to consulting any day.
Different type of stress. I’d describe it as pressure.
