Sure, I always entertain the notion. If I had more of a financial cushion I'd give it a try. If I could work remotely from the west of Ireland, I'd be gone tomorrow. The next few years in particular seem like a good time to be admiring the scenery somewhere else.

I’m currently planning my exit. I want to go to a (unnamed to avoid context clues) country as a student, take the language for a year, then continue my college degree. I’ve applied to 2 schools this week, once I get my enrollment letter I can get my student visa, begin selling stuff, finding housing, and then coordinate moving my family there (who are STOKED). The thing is about this (or any such] plan is that it will be expensive, fraught with uncertainty, and I’m anxious about how much stuff I’ll simply need to throw out. It’s scary.

This AI stuff is a bubble that’s already bursting and I’ve been laid off before, I know some of the signs and it’s begun

People said they would leave after Obama, Trump, and Biden and Trump again and have. There are in flows and outflows in the US.

Upside of US - pay, career movement, great protected parks, regulated industries, employee protections (to a degree, free to invest, freedom of movement, great people, great places, great entertainment (sports. Theatre, movies, amusement parks etc. Great libraries. Our houses are huge compared to most places. Our stores are well stocked. Gas prices are low compared to others minus the middle east. Colleges/higher education is well respected. US workers are efficient.
Downside: you cannot get sick. If you do, good luck. If you are poor, that is potentially the end, unlucky, financial ruin. Your chances of you or your kids getting shot in school is higher than any developed nation in the world with the leading cause of non-infant death being gun violence (not always on school). Count on being wise with your money or work for a very long time. Count on long hours worked to move ahead to potentially get downsized for company profits. Count on your Healthcare eating away at your paycheck.

I am an American citizen with a foreign born wife and I’m leaving the country to live in my wife’s country.
Even before the election, I started to feel the squeeze that raising two kids with a disabled wife was becoming impossible, and the health insurance situation is progressively getting worse.
I just don’t see much of a future living in the US when people embrace fascism, especially the Democrats who allow this to happen by not making material changes.
My wife’s home country has lots of problems but as a software engineer I can make decent salary and get all the resources I need to be able to fully provide for my wife’s and kid’s needs. I’ll be able to save money, enjoy a healthier physical climate, and give my self time to take of myself.
Right now I’m just slogging through work, trying to help my wife, and be a good father to my kids, but I am just physically exhausted. So selling everything and moving abroad to a more democratic nation with a more dynamic economy makes a ton more sense.
I don’t blame people for wanting to leave the US, but know that if you don’t have ties to a particular country, it will be difficult to immigrate there. The majority of livable countries have strict rules, so it’s best to find an edge, marry a foreigner, look at your ancestry and so on.
I'd love to for a bit. Unfortunately that's something of a pipe dream with a house and an in-office job. Maybe in a few years' time I can pull it off. Where would you consider going?
