Yes, I can relate to this. It seems like the techs aren’t self-aware about their contribution to the problems we are facing in health care and our work force. They want to do very little and get paid a lot.
As it is they are asked to do a lot for very little. In many cases little respect also.
Yes we have the same problem. Reading the comments above, I must say this is a pretty common situation. Curious as to how others deal with this.
There’s not much you can do. When you pay them the same as some other low skill entry level jobs but expect them to perform highly skilled duties, what kind of employees do you think you’re going to get? You think they care about their $16/hr? There is no scarcity in jobs like these.
We have the same exact problem at our hospital but truthfully it’s the entire field of pharmacy that’s created this problem for techs and pharmacist. It’s crappy all the way around.
We’ve been full staffed from staff pharmacist, clinical pharmacists, and management. However, our managers or anyone else have never thought to help do some tech duties. In my opinion, if the techs can see everyone else pitch in, they’d feel more inclined to come in because it’s a ‘team’ effort.
Totally agree. You as a pharmacist there, should know exactly what the techs do and are responsible for. The problem at many places full staffed or short handed is training. They don't do adequate cross training, (or any). So when someone calls out especially the techs things don't get done, or get done by the one person that does know how to do something. It's stressful to everyone. I feel for our techs. They are ask to do skilled work but aren't paid much more than working in a 7-11. That doesn't intill loyalty.
There is always drama between the techs, and it's exhausting. And hard to get people to come to work too. We're chronically understaffed. I'm sorry it's taking a toll on you. I get it! Here's to hoping the new year is easier on you and brings some positive changes.
Yeah they have drama at home, with each other, or are perpetually late or call out. I’m not in hospital but I imagine it’s the same
I don't know what is up with them but it is slightly driving me crazy having to deal with them on the daily. This kind of thing is just too much in a professional setting.
At my facility the younger staff does not understand the importance of attention to detail and the expectation is constantly being lowered so that no one is offended or upset about their work ethic. In my opinion holding people accountable and requiring professionalism is a MUST. We can not ignore small issues and should be addressing them head on as they will only fester up into larger issues as the staff will assume the behavior is appropriate.
I heard about that. It isn't easy to find the right technician. Since there is a shortage, it is easy for technicians to find a job within weeks.
Some places they layoff workers for attitude problems. If it gets too out of hand you could recommend them for some disciplinary action. Hope this helps
Sorry to hear that. What kind of problems do you deal with them?
I've observed this as well. I really don't know where all the unnessecary dram is coming from. It's definitely giving everyone a difficult time.
