Is being constantly reachable the real tradeoff of moving up in finance? A older friend of mine who’s a corporate executive told me that the higher you climb, the harder it gets to set boundaries. More decisions get escalated to you, more people expect quick responses, and it becomes harder to fully disconnect. It made me wonder if that’s just part of seniority in the industry, or if some people have found a way to move up without work taking over.

Probably true. They make a lot though so I think it’s a fair expectation.

Fair point. The compensation definitely helps, but I wonder if there are leaders who've figured out how to maintain boundaries without sacrificing their careers.

I think it’s part of seniority for sure and it’s been something I’ve been thinking about for awhile. I’m not sure if the increased pay is worth the mental trade off of being “always on”. Would definitely depend on how much my pay would increase to determine if it’s worth it.

That’s exactly how I’m thinking about it too. The extra pay sounds great in theory, but if it comes with never fully being able to disconnect, the tradeoff gets a lot harder to justify. At some point, the question becomes how much your peace of mind is worth.

Curious here - my buddy just became a “Director” of Business Development in a LCOL area for a professional sports team. He likes to brag about how much he makes but I don’t really buy it. Obviously it’s subjective depending who you ask. Also, “director” gets thrown around willy nilly now. Any idea what someone like this makes? Seems like a couple years ago he was just selling tickets which kind of sell themself. Wondering if I should go do something similar since I’m sales oriented lol.

Advice needed on handing in notice, I recently signed an offer letter and understand the screening process takes 4-6 weeks. I have a month's notice period and have agreed a preliminary start date in Feb.

I was planning on not handing my notice in until the checks had been completed so its all secured (not that I think I will fail any checks), but apparently I need a reference from my current employer not previous ones. Can't really do this without handing in notice can I?

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.
