Is consulting a toxic work environment or is it a myth?

Mythical and toxic environment that will beat you down at some point in your career

likefunny

Depends on your company, project, client and leadership. So no, not universally. When I started, I was on a really toxic project with high turnover. Right now, I’m on a dream of a project that respects work life balance. It’s a gamble

like

@EY 1 with that project:
1) had a client who had no boundaries in terms of working hours (we got plenty of 3am emails) so that trickled down to us
2) our leadership team had the best intentions but did not really protect us from the client - whatever the client wanted, whenever, they got it. At least this was the perception
3) if something went wrong, it could turn into a conversation of letting the person go....we had a >75% turnover rate over 6 months...so ppl operated out of stress and fear sometimes
4) bcuse of point 3, ppl had to turn to CYA, which can fuel ppl turning on each other and being paranoid (we once spent 30 minutes getting reprimanded for using the word ‘leverage’ in a deck)

Good people with good intentions but just not the best management at the time

Really depends what you have done in your life up until this point. I’ve worked at worse places and done harder things, so my perspective is that it could be worse. The work in consulting isn’t repetitive which I like. A lot of other corporate gigs, you have an initial learning curve and then you get role down pat in in 3-6 months and it gets relatively boring after that. Then you have 3 years or so until promotion or you’re waiting for someone to leave their position ahead of you so you can move up (so it could take longer). Long story short even when you leave consulting you and go the corporate route you can easily be just as dissatisfied. Just align your career with your values. If you value variety everyday, consulting might not be bad. If you are married and value being home with your family by 6pm leave consulting immediately. You’ll find life is more agreeable when you align your career with what you want out of life.

Toxic. I’ve been trying to leave for years but can’t ...

like

Yeah and the money. I was about to leave this year but then covid happened.

I work in government services and am a lady and joined like a year ago. Deloitte has been nothing but supportive and wonderful. I had a stress dream about my old workplace about the behavior I endured there (sexism, people not giving me key information) and woke up so grateful to be apart of my team and in my offering portfolio.

That being said, I’m only a year in and may still change my mind or encounter shitty behavior, but so far I’m loving it!

Depends on leadership. I work with a supervisor who constantly berates me and tells me that my performance is not what she had expected it to be 3 weeks on the case. When I asked her for support, she gave me examples of other people who came before me in the same role who were able to pick things up in a week. “Welcome to consulting” she says. Need to do some self reflection. Not sure if it’s me or her. Never had this much self doubt.

She’s wrong you know. It’s probably because she had a bad leadership role model (at least that what I would like to think). She does not have to berate you to get you to perform - that’s a misconception she may have. Honestly, if I were in your shoes, I would give her this feedback. I’ve had terrible managers before and it took me a long time to realize that sometimes they didn’t know they were terrible, just trying to do what they thought worked to get results. I’ve had feedback conversations all the way up to managing directors and they’ve always gone well. I’ve had to prep for those conversations ofc and plan for the worse, but it’s always been worth it

To echo D4: consulting isn’t perfect, but it’s a way better culture than at the other corporations I’ve worked for! D4 is generally respectful of diversity, full of smart people doing interesting things, and lets you explore different things until you find what works for you. The hours aren’t great, but tbh most of us are overachievers that would be working overtime regardless of what our managers said....

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

Have new analyst on the team with an MBA and project experience. After working with them for 2 months it’s apparent that there are 0 consulting skills (excel, outlook, PowerPoint) and they freeze up even on internal calls. They are young and coachable, and I offered to put time into that. However at a company event they made no effort to get to know the team and chose to stick to their familiar colleagues in their home office. I’d like to ask for a new resource but interested in feedback.

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
