I think if you are applying to people who regular recruit from mckinsey, this may be a flag. Would put your actual role down and put it in bullets that you’ve been JEMing or whatever
Why would it be a red flag? Most consultants manage engagements at some point in their career. What is going to be your role if not for that ?
Isn’t that called a JEM j=junior?
Engagement Manager from McKinsey is incredibly strong on a resume.
Associate is also very good.
But I will say I generally discount candidates who try to stretch their title. I’ll see people add Senior to Associate or Manager when I know the firm doesn’t use this title.
I’d use your real title and point out you’re in a Manager role now in your first bullet. That’s still very strong no need to push it.
I would assume that you might be looking because you cant make EM
I’d put the actual role (Asc/not Sr ASC, JEM, or acting EM, as these bs titles don’t exist in NA) and add bullets that show you managed engagements. If someone wants to hire only the designated EM, you won’t be able to cover you haven’t been designated. On a bright side, there’s no big difference btw tenured ASC and early EM exits these days, and there might be something more valuable in your experience than just the last title.
So your concern is that you have been CTL'd or denied a promotion?
Outside of PE the biggest issue is that you won't get full credit for your EM experience - some hiring managers will only hire people with a year of EM experience at a certain level (and McK folks are known to BS a bit - I've seen people describing themselves as Jr EM or Sr EM, which AFAIK isn't an official level).
Others will simply want 'x years of McKinsey', especially for IC roles.
If you aren't getting pushed out, I think you'll get better opportunities if you wait a bit. But if you find a good enough job... Take it. In this economy...
That’s a fake title lol
I mean it is. OP i think the gist is dont do it lol
Yeah big flag stay at associate level your whole life
I’ve seen folks do this. I don’t like it because it look like you’re stretching the truth and that’s not a good look and the first thing people want to think. If you’re truly playing that role, describe it in your experience.
What this person is saying is that he gave himself EM role title when he’s a consultant acting like an EM
