If you're a federal law clerk you may not need a recruiter, presumably you'd have enough connections to be networking effectively. If you feel like you need a recruiter, and you can work with a good one, it shouldn't be a bad idea.
If you need to use a recruiter, then I would use a recruiter. They are kind of a last resort for me. I would try to go around using one if I were you, they can sometimes be more of a hassle than anything.
As a former federal law clerk, I don’t recall any clerks using recruiters. Since the firm would already be paying you a clerkship bonus, I suspect paying a recruiter on top of that could be an issue. This could result in your being offered a class year haircut, bonus for only one of two clerkships, or some other lesser deal, or being passed over entirely.
I would avoid incurring this additional cost.
I was a federal law clerk and didn’t use a recruiter. I just looked on the firms’ websites or sent an email to their recruiters.
My co clerk and I both used a recruiter, and we both landed at great places. I got a large signing bonus and moving expenses covered. I also got my start date pushed back which was great. Granted one could get these things without a recruiter, but I hate networking, so it worked out for me.
A recruiter can be a tremendous asset because they’ll help with your resume, interview prep, and making sure the process goes smoothly. Some firms, however, won’t accept recruiter submissions for clerks, so make sure your recruiter is honest and transparent about when it’s better to submit directly.
