i'm happy working on any client and they're happy with the work i provide, so i don't want to seem annoyingly picky and choosy... but in the longterm as my ONLY client, it's not a role I'm reasonably suited for. this was not my shop's plan when i signed up, it was an unexpected change one month after i started
CD, ECDs, HR, what's your opinion?
Not at all. People move around all the time for all sorts of reasons. But maybe just say you’re looking for a new challenge at a place more creatively aligned with your ambitions.
One watch out is I don’t think you need to get into not wanting to work on your current client bc it’s women’s products and you’re a guy, that may raise some questions with them you don’t intend to… ie, you’re expected to be able to work on stuff that doesn’t relate to you personally, will you be able to do that for them? why exactly can’t you put your best work forward? are they going to have a problem with you and women in their office? are you going to be difficult to work with? etc. I get what you’re saying just be careful with how you phrase stuff like that for a prospective employer.
Hell, I'll take that gig (100% serious). I've worked on women's health before. DM me
You want to leave your agency because you don’t want to work on feminine products and you’re a man? That could come across as not great. Like you either can’t write to women or you don’t have a desire for it. It should all be about whether the work is good or not, which you seem to have not mentioned. Here’s how I see it: I’m queer and all of the accounts I’ve been on never align with who I am, but I just do the work because that’s my job.
In Advertising? No. In fact, I did NOT take an offer at a more prestigious agency because I had just started a good paying job at an agency a few months earlier. I regret that now. Had I taken that offer I would have a much stronger portfolio now, with better clients and better work because I would have been free to be much more creative.
Also the job I stayed at was also in women’s health and I was the only guy on the team. It was actually a very toxic workplace, turns out. I eventually found out that I was the subject of a LOT of workplace gossip, mostly revolving around my personal life. I had a girlfriend, but I like to keep my personal life private. Apparently the gossip was that I was some kind of freewheeling playboy flirt because I complimented my coworker’s earrings one day!
