From everything you've said, it sounds like the value you, try to show you, give you something special (bonus) and are being clear and transparent about the process. If you don't like the process, the go somewhere else. But I hate it say it, we're all replaceable. We rotate or move off accounts and the world doesn't end. We think it will, and it doesn't. But, take time to think about how the just tried to show your what they think and go from there. Also think if the long game as six months goes by quickly. Is this a company you want to be a part of?
SAD is right. Earlier in my career the CEO told me he could only get me a $3k raise so I found another job with a $50k raise. When the CEO in 3 hours came up with $55k I learned it's all political bs of people trying to keep spending low and profits high. Sorry but it's what we've created
Option 1: be super clear on what you need to demonstrate in that next six months (documented) and check them off one by one.
Option 2: leave
You're welcome.
Experience gets you hired. Performance (and sadly politics) gets you promoted.
That's fairly normal, but if you see another opportunity elsewhere take it. Getting promoted after 6 mos is rare, and then it'll take you another 2 years for an increase.
Calm down, people. We're supposed to be colleagues supporting each other on here...
A person with similar experience to me was recently hired to my team 3 levels above me. I'm now training that person. The VP of my dept. has made me feel bad in the past for being concerned about title/money. Nevertheless I scheduled a meeting with the VP on Monday to discuss my career path.
You could be amazing, but off cycle promotions are rare if not impossible at most places. It's likely not anything personal, their hands are just tied.
⬆⬆⬆ You are! And should re examine went you're so attached to where you are now...
Nah FCB was too harsh. Calm down buddy.
@FCB1 I'm good at my job, but in the past I haven't been good at sticking up for myself. The anonymousness of this platform has me coming off much more assertive than I am in real life. I wanted to listen to others' advise in this industry to make sure I'm thinking this through from every angle.
I appreciate your willingness to advise, but telling a female who is trying to figure out how to tactfully navigate her career path to 'shut the fuck up' isn't helpful.
I was in the same situation. But instead of waiting another 6 months. I decided to take my creative directors advice. Which was to speed up the process by getting and offer and bringing it back to your supervisor and say "your move". Of course you will have to be willing to take the other offer if they (agency/boss) decided you're not worth the fight. But it worked out for me and I was able to get both my promotion and raise sooner because of it. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself and get what you deserve.
OP same boat as you but I was told by EOY... told my boss I want to expedite as much as possible by reaching my goals faster... will have a 3 month check in on progress. I like where I am so I'm willing to put the effort in and see if it comes through.
Sadly. You have to force the issue at hand to get anything to happen, especially at bigger shops.
Sounds like your people are acknowledging your value. They've given you a bonus, and are looking to promote you on the next cycle. I had a similar situation earlier on my career, and the agency came through better than expected on the next cycle.
You've essentially got three options:
1. Shut the fuck up and wait for the next cycle. Leave in six months if they don't come through.
2. Tell your supervisor your title and salary requirements, and that they've got 30 days to meet them or you'll resign. Be prepared to resign with this option, as that is the most likely result.
3. Shut the fuck up, take your superior resume, and get a new, higher paying gig somewhere else. This should be easy, since you're apparently God's gift to strategy.
And while we're on that subject, since you're such a brilliant Strategist, why are you asking a message board to help you devise a career management strategy?
👏🙌 great job practicing standing up for yourself OP.
On a lighter note ...isn't it funny that Sr. Art Director = SAD 😭
@CD1 I appreciate the check in. VP had a conflict and asked to reschedule for next week. I'm thinking I should schedule two weeks out and use the extra time to try and get another job offer in hand :/
@strategist 1 I would say that a majority of the office knows me and I'm well liked. I work long hours, and voluntarily work on new biz. What else can I do (from an office politics standpoint)?
And I'm certain my performance is well above my pay grade.
How is your performance way above pay grade, exactly?
