I think it would be easier to work at a larger chain store than a small grocery store. The larger chain store would have more downtime, but you would also have more opportunities for advancement and training.
Larger chain stores might have more downtime, but they also might have more opportunities for advancement. Smaller stores might be easier to work at because you get to know the customers and the employees better, but there might not be as many opportunities for advancement.
It depends somewhat on your own personal preference. If you find the right small location, they will treat you like gold. However, most bigger stores have more scheduling flexibility and are a bit more stable. Downtime varies a lot on how many other people they have working, but I have found smaller places tend to be a bit less demanding unless they are a really busy location.
