Is it becoming more common today to be asked to do free spec work during the interview process compared to times past? If so, why do you think that is?

It’s becoming more common to me, at least. I had to pass on a job recently because of that. I did it to prove myself one time, and heard nothing back either way. That was the first, only, and last time for me.

Because people "think" they are designers but actually don't have skill sets like critical thinking, high level information translation and brand awareness and adaption to be successful in most markets.

This is an issue that could likely be caught in a designer's portfolio or lack thereof, no?

It's somewhat related to how employers have the advantage in today's job market. There's a lot of competition, and having people do projects is a way to winnow down the field of candidates. And since people need work they're unlikely to be turned off by it. Doing a test project isn't a new idea, of course, but it does seem to have become more involved lately.

I have done this in early career to prove I was capable. But once you’re established you should not need this.

like

Yes.. it’s not new.

Depending on the state, it could be illegal - check your local laws. I know from experience in that my old company used to do it until we got hit with a lawsuit

like

I've never heard of this before, but I wish I had! Unfortunately I think being asked for spec work is so common I doubt people sue unless they can prove their work was used without consent/pay.

It feels like it's becoming more common. I'm sure there are actually times where the company is using it as a jumping off point for work internally, but it's probably also the easiest and laziest way for the company to trial a candidate for the work they'd potentially be doing if they were to be hired. Like many others mentioned though, there's other ways to qualify and verify so I also disagree with this practice

like

It’s a hard no. If they want you to work on a project, then they should pay you. Period. You don’t go the the dentist and ask them for a free tooth repair to check them out. Or ask a plumber to fix your sink to make sure they know what they’re doing. Why would anyone expect free work from anyone in our field?

This yr would be the first time im eligible to vote. The primary is coming up for my state. Im a bit confused as to what were voting for. Arent the candidates already determined? Is Joe Biden not the democratic nominee and the incumbent president would automatically default to being the other parties candidate as long as theyre eligible. What am i missing? The resources online are horrible and say that were voting for our parties preferential candidate...again isnt that already determined?
