Nothing in life is guaranteed, but generally you get out of things what you put into them
If you want to be great - absolutely. Don’t waste a day.
No ... because if you go continuously go "above & beyond" that becomes the new baseline expectation, which is impossible to maintain long term. Go above & beyond when you have an opportunity to do so & succeed. Do this a few times a year. Look awesome.
No, not worth it even with a promo

To me personally, no. You’re essentially at the whim of the YE panel and if you don’t know anyone on the panel then good luck.
I’m a new hire and teetering on the edge of doing the bare minimum to get by or going above and beyond. It seems grim though since most people automatically get promoted in 2 years and an early promotion is usually rare. Not to mention bonuses are small.
You want to be good. Youll learn what above and beyond is in the context of your comfort and abilities. You are going to watch the folks getting by leave. Not that you have to stay, but the springboard as you get promoted is a bit more vertical
Seems like something you need to figure out for yourself if it’s worth it to you.
Nothing is guaranteed but if you know the system and have your people in place (sponsors, supporters etc) you owe it to yourself to give it your best shot.

There’s a big range between the bare minimum and going above and beyond. It’s your personal brand to make of it what you want so it’s a question of how you want to be viewed as a team member. I’d rather work with someone who’s reliability good compared to someone who is sporadically stellar but generally bare minimum.
Nothing is guaranteed so having a track record you can be proud of makes for an easier climb when you’re ready to go for that promo. Promo depends on advocates so you want people to feel confident when backing you.
If companies rewarded us with going above and beyond that’d be one thing. But “meets expectations” is no reason to go above and beyond

Being average is fine. But there can be long term consequences of getting pigeonholed or finding yourself without employable skills. I would make sure you are continuing to develop and at no risk of getting a PIP.
Know what matters. Go above and beyond when it matters. Be a good employee but know what your values are and don’t let any job make you compromise them too much. Again, there’s always a balance. Doing good work and going above and beyond at least when it matters will serve you well in the long run, even if it may not seem that way now
Also, going above and beyond can be to show others that you are a good employee but it can also benefit you. Many times this has allowed me to grow and that growth may be crucial for your long term career
