Is it not normal to ask about equity during the negotiation process? When I asked about it, the recruiter seemed shocked. My last company offered equity, but I was there for 12 years, so I suppose things could have changed over that time. I’m beginning to think that companies are being a little more protective of their equity, but I find having some equity in a company makes me more loyal to an organization, but whatever.

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. When I negotiated my comp, all my discussions were around me being a junior and I only accepted my comp for that reason (would not have accepted if I was step above junior since it was low). Negotiations happened with HR, but my offer letter and documents never mention junior (but I have proof from HR saying I am a junior).
