How far along in your search are you? If you’re not interviewing yet, it’s totally fine to pause. If you’re already interviewing or have an offer, that’s when navigating relationships can get a little trickier. If there’s a material change to the circumstances at your firm, then firms tend to be understanding. Communicating with whomever you’re interviewing with that you want to see how these changes play out is not only reasonable, but exactly what they’d want their associate to do if changes were happening at their firm.
If you’re 100% sure that you wouldn’t take an offer, then I’d recommend declining the second interview, with a ton of grace and humility. Let them know how difficult it is because you’re excited about the firm but that you also want to give your firm a fair shake, and that you hope to be able to reach out to them again in the future if need be.
