Yep, 99% of the time a PIP means you're outta there. It's a way for the firm to cover their butts for when they let you go
You probably didn't realize that you were on a pre-PIP for 30-60 days before they put you on the official PIP.
Learn as much as you can from this experience. Lots of times a PIP can be avoided or mitigated by reaching out for help when you are struggling.

I’ve seen this happen. Your counselor might have only been told after the partners made the decision.
Unfortunately, PIPs are often just the first step in showing someone the door, even if they make it seem like a real chance to improve. It’s frustrating when the communication isn’t clear.
I went through the same thing. I was on a PIP that was supposed to be 30 days and on day 11 I was supposed to have a regular 1:1 with my supervisor. Right before it started an HR rep was added to the meeting and they terminated me effective immediately. I tried to ask if I did something while on the PIP and they said my supervisor already told me what happened (which was only why I was on the PIP). I don’t think it’s normal maybe not even entirely legal.
I'm often surprised by how little silos know about each other. Our team hired someone in January, but no one new the actual hire date. We knew it was coming but not the specific day. Our team found out they had started about two weeks after their first day. Someone onboarded them but no one told our team. Or they told one person on our team that kept it to them selves.
