They tell you the raise, you say thank you and leave the office.
I would say you have little to no leverage going from 1st to 2nd year.
When I was promoted, they presented a salary figure, and said "what are your thoughts?" I took that as an open invitation to express dissatisfaction (it was actually a fair salary), but the increase agreed to above what they offered wasn't material.
EY 1 nailed it.
Smaller firms are a little different. After at least two years, if you feel you are being offered something significantly below market, you should present your case when the time for pay discussions comes around.
