Is it typical for a firm to have an Attorney ONLY Christmas dinner at a county club and then after announcing said dinner to plan a paralegal/attorney happy hour (at a “bar” area with food/appetizers for you guys”)? I think this is very segregating and clearly shows the two partners/owners what dbags they are. Thoughts?

My old firm had a lawyer-only gala and a full staff party (one in spring and one around the holidays), along with tons of lawyer-only happy hours/etc. I lateraled to a new firm that makes almost no distinction between attorneys/non-attorneys for firm events (only exception is partner-only events). Honestly, it makes me realized how terrible it was to have such a divide between lawyers/non-lawyers. My old firm people would literally complain like “oh, that’s an all-staff event, I’m not going”. Terrible culture, glad I left!

Common at small firms that try to act particularly snooty. Ironically big firms are much more egalitarian (at least on this issue, not necessarily others).

This Is pretty common, especially at small/mid sized firms.

Or maybe the admins prefer a more laid back environment like a bar, rather than a stuffy country club.

I think it’s only fair not to force the admin staff to spend their free time with lawyers. I mean, who wants to do that?

We have an annual associates dinner for attys and paralegals, to welcome and roast the new attys. But we also have an annual holiday party for the entire office.

Quick PSA: one of the perks of going in-house, is that you’re no longer at an ad agency and all that that entails.

Just started a new in-house tech fl gig and it’s giving me whiplash! Somehow this dept has brought every person/toxic behavior from their old agency just to a new environment. Nowhere is perfect but good god. I honestly think companies/HR could learn a lot about their depts from freelancers.

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.
