Is it weird to want to job hop just to see what other places are like? I’ll never understand people who stay at one place for like 15 years. Life is so short. I don’t want my resume to be ugly but I’m often tempted by the grass possibly being greener. Always feel like there’s a better fit somewhere but there isn’t enough life or resume grace to find out.

For a different perspective, I feel like this sounds fun and exciting when you're younger. Moving quickly loses its luster as you get more mature and realize transitions are exhausting. It's reestablishing yourself, forging connections, learning new systems, etc. all over again. And most firms do a very poor job of actually integrating, so it's mostly on you to ensure the move is successful. Having made a few moves in recent years (following another person, so not really my choice), being at one firm for 15 years where you like the work and the people enough to stay put sounds like the dream.

If someone looks at me the wrong way, I’ll talk to a recruiter. Go for it - see the world through every law firm you can!

I hear you. The excitement of starting at a new place but then the trade off is leaving one’s comfort zone and not liking the new place.

Just a different shade of green but it might fit you better. Staying with the colour analogy: I have had multiple friends leave the firm and the first six months of „oh my god this is great and everyone loves me“ is real.

I wouldn’t do this unless there’s a problem you’re trying to “fix” by doing so. Otherwise it’s too risky if you’re more senior than a midlevel. Even if you find a new firm to fix an existing problem, you may experience new ones that you dislike more than the original problem you were trying to fix.

In my case, I was pushed out after 10 years so the decision was made for me. In my case, I lucked out because the new firm lets me focus on only the kinds of work I enjoy in my practice, and leave behind a component of my work I didn’t enjoy. The people are also much nicer and welcoming, and the group is better positioned for my specific practice.

If you do this make sure that you can be patient and properly vet things. Do your diligence and don’t make emotional decisions. Ensure you have financial stability and a healthy emergency fund in case the decision is made for you. My search took over a year.

As you get older you start to want more stability. Also, when you have a book of business it’s not great to jump around because your clients might not keep moving with you - they want stability too.

Not weird to feel this way, but the grass isn't always greener. As a recruiter, I have a very hard time placing candidates with 3+ moves in a 5 -7 year period, so it's not worth job hopping just to test something out if you're marginally happy and don't have any pain points that will be alleviated by changing firms.

If you do have pain points, reach out to some friends and law school classmates at other firms to talk through how things are for them, or contact an experienced recruiter who *should* be honest with you about whether your issues are universal in Big Law or could potentially be alleviated with a lateral move.

likesmart

It’s possible you might regret a move just to see what’s out there. I moved twice in my 35-year career and each time there were push and pull factors. And I don’t have a single regret.

When do you think associates are usually let go in small practice groups that are currently being overwhelmed with work? Is it when it starts to slows down or when they already have a candidate to replace you? Just trying to figure out how long I have after annoying a partner 😂.

How much more time does it gonna take, any idea? Or is it normal. Please help me with this 🙏🙏 .Deloitte
