I promise no one reads them
Doesn’t hurt, though may be a waste of time
No. We live in 2026 now.
I don't like applying places that don't want one (a letter with 2-3 paragraphs seems alright), and I would require one before I looked at a resumé, when in a position to hire, but now who knows? Everyone seems to cheat with AI, so how can you stand out as competent and a good communicator now without a direct referral? Cover letters used to help.
Cost and time investment is very less if you set up a template and tone and set up ai to do it for you. Doesn't hurt
Writing fan fiction for an employer is crazy. Don’t do it.
If they ask for it, then I do. Your chances of getting a call without a solid referral is already extremely low. GenAI will scan all your data in seconds to reject you, so it’s your choice to minimize the data you are providing.
So it won’t hurt to keep it. In the end you want to communicate as much as you can about yourself. If you want a new job in this market, you need to put extra effort in
No, not unless there’s something very specific you want to include (eg, rationale for a career gap)

Many times they are expected to show you are putting effort into your application, but they are mostly junk that no one pays attention to.
If you do your networking right and really understand what the team needs, then the cover letter is a great way to link your resume experience to their needs.
