Is the only way up in this industry away from the stuff we actually love doing? I finally landed my dream role, but the adulting side of this promotion is hitting me like a ton of bricks. Instead of solving elegant technical problems, my entire day is spent mediating ego wars between Product and Engineering and managing budget spreadsheets. I’m making more money than ever, but I haven't touched an IDE in three weeks and I feel like my soul is evaporating.

Ok, go back to be an IC engineer , make less money and keep your “soul”. And let others give you work and run on business. I don’t see what is the problem here

Why should anyone get promoted for doing work that was given to them ? You don’t want to manage business, then stick to being a junior engineer. And make way for people who actually want to expand their career and be a leader. These types of posts belong in a hallmark card. “I want to make money but don’t want to deal with people and manage money. Just want to solve “technical problems” that is given to me by bosses”- such a cliche. Go take a pay cut. Being an low level IC is easiest job in the world, just accept it and take the money for it

Therres a difference between being promoted into management and being promoted on the IC track. IC track is muuuch slower because it takes time to have a large, broad impact and influence without the power of management. You get power (and pay) by having a long track record of being right. ICs gain influence by excellent tech work and by seeking broader influence in that space.

If you go into management roles, you suddenly are competing in a space you hate, with folks who love it and possibly even trained for it. It's hard to win that battle.

Sounds like typical corporate politics. If you want to stay doing technical work you may need to find research positions or work for a startup. Most large companies suffer greatly from the peter principal.

Architecture is not a tech function. It is all about connecting dots and guiding people to do the right things. It’s an enabler role, often a mediator/jury, than actual development.

Half agree with you about the people part, but for real architecting there's still a lot of knowledge about best tools for the job and best approaches..

Hey Fishes,

Currently I’m looking for an opportunity with Big 3 firms.

Presently working with a Big4 firm.
Yoe : 5 years (before MBA)
Qualification : BE, MBA (tier 1)

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.

This post is an alert message for anyone joining the Johnson & Johnson EMEA account for SAP & had Rakesh Sharma for their Manager round.

He is nothing less than a con man & will promise you a lot to make you join the account. After that he will put you in testing projects. If you ask for a release, he will either not release you or release with a very bad rating and influence other project managers to not take you into their projects.

You will be left with no choice other than leaving TCS.

I’m a Junior product manager with a Master’s in Healthcare Management. I feel like the current company that I am at has my title as JPM, but I am doing PM work i.e creating product roadmaps, collaborating across stakeholders (business, marketing, design teams), creating user stories/features, etc. and I feel like my work isn’t being valued and I’m constantly being micromanaged by business teams expectations.

How feasible is it for me to apply to a PM role with less than a year of experience?

1. I enjoy the people management more than individual contributor stuff. What career paths do you see in our industry for people who are managing support engineering teams?

I’m in interviews with a few companies. It was initially to see what was out there to negotiate my pay. Now, I’m seriously considering leaving my current company because of what one of the prospect companies represent: everything I want in a company/role. (Plus they reached out to me) AND they will pay me almost double what I’m currently making annually, put me in a position to advance (so many options!!!!!) and allow me to move/travel when I get ready to.

What should I do? Guidance please!!!
