companies are struggling a lot in terms of retaining existing business & expenditure occur for running a company, otherside either hiring/layoffs occuring due to certain facts like seniors, more knowledgeable shouldn't been continue in orgs like politics, sort of certain process takes the processing times and head count release sometime requires country head approvals requirement, when high demand project have to onboarded immediately sort of positions would be filled as soon as possible, remaining things companies have there own policies and procedures
Referral is better than applying through a career portal. In the company's careers portal, thousands of resumes are submitted for a single role, and not all will reach the hiring managers as ATS will reject many. But if a working employee refers a candidate's resume to a particular role, that will get highlighted and surely reach the hiring manager, although an initial screening will still happen.
Even after a referral, ensure your resume has relevant content so that someone can interview you🌝
So, try to build a strong resume. I'm considering you as an intern applying for a full-time data science role; now have a good resume, including impactful projects, skills, technology, and CGPA highlighted (I can't comment more as I am not a data scientist).
Apply for relevant roles! This is a common mistake I find; I've made it myself when I was a fresher, asking for a referral to a role that didn't suit me. Many roles will be listed, many of which are senior, but without rechecking the JD, giving the job ID for reference can lead to errors. The person referring should also check twice before referring.
So, all the above factors matter. Still, if you don't get a call for an interview, move on. Try better, try multiple places, and you will get it.
ATB!
