Is there any part of discovery that doesn't feel like a total waste of the client's money? We talk about the search for truth, but 90% of litigation is just finding creative ways to respond to interrogatories without actually giving the other side any useful information. If we were actually efficient, most cases would be over in three months instead of three years.

That’s why the Feds require initial disclosures.

This is so real. I’m doing rog responses right now where I’m trying to figure out how to answer without actually answering.

Some answers without answering:
Vague;
overburdening;
not in compliance;

Every discovery tool is potentially useful but there are unfortunately too many lawyers who view discovery as a never ending slush fund.

like

Yep

It’s a money machine no matter how it is done. However, I truly enjoy doing the discovery phase because 1. That is what I’m good at (when I get the work), 2. we CAN find SOME truths, some hidden facts the OP didn’t want us or the court to know and 3. Sometimes it is just worth the paper trail and time.

I joined a new team and have noticed something off with my Director over the last months (slurring speech, no show to calls or even full days of work). I finally asked a colleague about it today because I’m concerned about my Director. She confirmed that she’s noticed the same over the last few years, but no one ever says anything. In confidence she told me she can often smell alcohol. How can I help? I feel helpless. I’ve already lost someone to addiction and I can’t ignore this. Any advice?
