People usually say never accept your firm's counter but I disagree. I was set to lateral purely for financial reasons. My firm said they understood and they couldn't pay as much as my offer, but they gave me a counter that made it worth it to stay. They've treated me well and I'm up for partner this year. I'm glad I stayed.
What made it work is that I was honest and candid, they were too, and I truly like this firm and the people here.
I agree. If you like the firm and they like you well enough to make an offer in excess of market, you should jump on it.
I think there is a world in which you could accept a counter. If you like it there and it really is about the money then stay. They would't make a counter offer if they didn't really want to keep you.
