My current boss is okay and we get along pretty well. But I've had some bad bosses. I think it's just something with the restaurant business, there are some really odd characters who wind up running things. We used to joke that people who couldn't make it anywhere else would wind up managing restaurants.

Omg that’s so true! It’s like you can have crappy people who don’t know how to manage and don’t know how to be good to their people - and somehow they end up at the top.
Recently I was terminated after working for a bar & restaurant as a Bartender for 7.5 years for "being late too many times". I appealed my case-which went to "trial" over phone. My ex -boss lied about 3 different things about me during the trial.
A week prior she told me that she didn't think I was a good fit anymore and to start looking for a job. I put my heart and soul into that place. I had regulars I loved-that loved me. I was ALWAYS the closer and never complained.
The amount of times she said I was late to the judge was double the amount I actually was. And I submitted my clock ins as evidence. I was never more than 7min late (1 or 2 times)-also under 5min.
I was denied unemployment. Even after appealing. It's been so hard to process this when she would say thing like "you'll always be family" and " i didn't want to have to do this". She also fired me over text- and I never saw her face to face until six weeks after being taken off the schedule- which is what she said instead of saying that I was fired or terminated. I've been looking for work since january. I was I actually terminated three days after my birthday and my last shift was my birthday at midnight and I left there around three a m like I usually did. So technically, my last shift was my birthday. I do have one more chance to appeal in the next couple weeks but I don't want to get denied a 3rd time and have to suffer that feeling all over again. I've been told to get someone to advocate for me- i'm not sure if I should lay it to rest or continue to pursue the fact that I do strongly believe I deserve unemployment. It would only be 1/4 of what I made there anyways. I really just don't understand how she does not care that she let me go- when she would talk to me in such a toxic way, was constantly on my case, about the smallest things and seem to always target me.
My money was ALWAYS dead on-my sales were always high and i closed the bar spotlessly.
I knew her for more than 15 years before working there. Then She bought the place and became my boss because I worked there for 2 years while she was also a bartender, then became the owner.
I've been trying to make a career shift back to what I studied in school, but I graduated college in 2007. I'm pretty sure the universe is pushing me towards that, but I still am having a hard time accepting that I'm "not deserving of unemployment" even when she already pays into it. And it would cost her minimal, and it would really help me out after so much dedication to that job and being a reliable employee for over seven years..
Has anyone been in a similar situation, or have they ever appeal their case? After getting denied, then get denied again and then win the third time? This is in Northern California.

Honestly, if your boss is the owner, she’s the one who is checking those unemployment claims. You could appeal (it doesn’t hurt) and then you need to show up to court and give them the evidence. Does the employee handbook say the you will be terminated for being late? You need to show that she didn’t give you enough warning. She should have given you verbal warning, then a paper warning. And that should have been signed by both of you for record keeping. If she didn’t do that you could fight it in unemployment court
