Yeah, I mean this is a problem for a lot of people working wage jobs. It's simply not enough income to pay rent in most bigger cities. I'm curious, you say that you did research on this, but does it match what your take home pay and rent costs actually are? I wouldn't just go off averages, I would do the math on your own situation.
Luckily, the area where I was offered the job has a cost of living pretty much the same as where I live now. Utilities and groceries were about the same according to the websites I've been using to compare different places that interest me. Phone bill, insurance, and car payment stay the same, so it basically came down to rent. I searched several sites like Zillow, Trulia, Rent.com, FB, etc. and rates were higher for the same basic 2br/2ba.
I'm curious as to why you find it curious that I said I did research on this. I had to research what rent costs actually are in the area to know that $19/hr minus pre-tax, post-tax, Medicare, FICA and insurance wouldn't leave enough left over for rent in the area. I didn't just ask Siri, lol!
But in all honesty, I did NOT dig too deeply into whether the different rate would change my tax bracket or how much insurance would cost through the company. With reference to insurance, I doubt they could have come close to what I have. I work for Blue Cross and only pay for my dependents, but it's a paltry sum. I can safely say it would be hard to beat my insurance situation.
