The conventional wisdom is to focus on transferable skills. And, it's always good to look at job postings like they're some kind of wish list. No one candidate would embody everything they're asking for. So don't talk yourself out of applying unless you're absolutely sure you don't have what it takes.
When you look at those job posts, frame your response from the viewpoint that you have "proven experience" -- regardless of where you are coming from. If you are coming straight out of college, you have proven yourself by completing a rigorous academic course of study that required dedication, commitment, struggle, sacrifice and no small level of intelligence. If you were a lawn maintenance worker, you have proven experience in tackling a job and making sure you provide quality service to the customer. Anything you have ever done is "experience." If they say they want five years of experience selling high rise apartment buildings, then they are fishing in a very select pond or are just delusional. If you see a job you want, pitch yourself as if you were selling a multi-million dollar mansion with a 10 percent commission. The more you do this, the better you will get at it, and the sooner it will pay off.
