It’s wild to think it’s been five years already! I do think we’ve become more adaptable and tech-savvy, especially with remote work. But there’s definitely still a lot of uncertainty, and mental health has been a major issue for so many of my kids. What do you think? Any positive changes you’ve noticed?
Coach
I think the obvious one is everyone has become more tech-savvy, and I do believe, in general, people have become more patient in certain situations (COVID taught us that there are life/death issues that face us every day rather than things we perceive to be life/death).
My feelings about the whole thing are mixed. Personally, I LOVED the lockdown. I loved being able to stay home and to have a break from all of the constant running around. I loved not having to be on the go constantly and I saved so much money because there was no place to go and nothing to spend money on. I got caught up on home organization and projects, spent time with my kids, and enjoyed reading lots if books. I had time to exercise, make healthy meals, and stay caught up on house hold chores. I had a much better life balance without physically going to work.
I did not mind teaching remotely. I liked it. I could teach the academic content and let the parents deal with behavior at home. I actually felt like my class was reasonably successful and the parents were so supportive. I know that not everyone felt this way. My husband hated it. He likes to go, go,go. It was so boring for him. He wanted to go out. He hates being home. It was like torture for him.
My balance has been better. I have really learned to leave work at work and to prioritize my health. I lost 40 pounds, exercise regularly now, and have better stress management strategies such as journaling and yoga. The pandemic lockdown gave me a break in the action that I really needed in order to figure out how to balance life better.
