Laid off on Halloween. In costume.
I’m so sorry - getting laid off unexpectedly is horrible and inhumane, no matter the circumstances but, damn. In costume! Did HR just address you as though you were in a normal outfit?
You want a horror story? I was gaslit, demoralized, and went into therapy thanks to the worst CD and ACD I've ever worked for (I can't say "with" because they don't view people junior to them as teammates)in my decade thus far in the industry.
Their true colors came out over the year I worked for them. We lost two copywriters (the first one being my long-term colleague) in a row. We had no other support in the day-to-day work and every single thing, right down to key frames in a banner ad, was scrutinized by them.
They worked together at a previous agency and fed off of each other's toxic energy.
Their opinions always ruled over anyone else's work and the ACD got insanely jealous when my partner and my's concept was selected by the client over theirs.
My partner left in tears due to verbal abuse and I was sacked about a month after that concept was greenlit.
Interestingly enough as I interviewed for a new job, I met two people who after asking who I reported into, mentioned how bad their experience was working with them at a previous agency.
I'm now in a much better place at a great shop with an excellent team and managers. The kind I was used to working with before my year from Hell.
PLEASE spill the name
My first pharma agency boss was, during the "Mad Men" days of the 60s, copy chief at Medicus Intercon, the pharma subsidiary of Benton & Bowles. B&B, like all Madison Avenue agencies of that era, maintained an East Side pied à terre for "entertaining" visiting clients, and agency folk who knew the right people, could often borrow the keys, when no clients were in town, for similar "entertaining" pursuits. On one such occasion, a Medicus copywriter was enjoying some horizontal "entertainment" in a balcony hammock suspended from the floor of the balcony above...which, unfortunately was not rated to support the weight of two people and collapsed on them, killing them both. "And I was the one who had to call his wife," my boss said.
Sad that people died… but happy to read this advertising story.
