I want to give you the feeling that you were built for other things
Agencies can leave ANYONE feeling like a failure. You’re gonna hear a lot from disillusioned cynics here in FB, but I understand the feeling. I actually also love advertising. This wasn’t some plan B or a career I accidentally fell into. This is what I wanted to do. But believe me, I’ve been around enough and have plenty of reason to become the biggest, most bitter cynic. And yet, I’m not. Maybe I’m a masochist.
I think you being on the account side, makes things a lot easier. I believe you can still find fulfillment and many of the things you like going in-house with a brand you admire. Client side, many of the things that are horrible about agencies, are quite different. Most times work life balance is better, work is far more stable without layoffs occurring every year or so. Employees have better benefits and protections. Obviously it will vary by company, so do your research.
For creatives is a but tougher, but I think you can still do what you like somewhere else.
I’m sure it’s hard to keep perspective given the situation you’re in.
A few suggestions, fwiw:
(1) You were in a really unfortunate agency environment - that’s not indicative of all agencies so do let your most recent experience colour potential future agency opportunities.
(2) If you still get a charge from seeing a great advertising campaign and try to dissect it, you have passion and shouldn’t give up just yet - a lot of growth comes from adverse situations.
(3) It’s okay to take a detour and do something else - or apply your advertising passion in a non agency environment, e.g., client side, nonprofit, government, etc. You may find a better fit and opportunities.
I meant to state “don’t let your most recent experience…”
Some agencies will suck the life out of you. But if you still love it keep going! If you’re unsure take a break and find something new for a while and then reconsider your options.
