Everyday.
All day, every day.
Every creative I know (myself included) wants to leave but the money's too good and most people put money before their happiness. (I think about quitting every day but something always stops me from pulling the trigger.)
There are also those few who genuinely enjoy the work they do and can look past it all. I don't identify with them but they're out there.
Existential dread is a very old concept and effects some more than others, unfortunately.
You're not alone, though, if that gives you any comfort :/
Every other day for 40 years. Never figured out what else I could do that would pay the mortgage and two college tuitions. So her I am, still doing it. If you really want to get out, do it before you’re making too much money to leave.
Weekly for sixteen years. Find me a job that pays this well and will hire me and keeps me in NYC (or maybe LA) and I’m out in a heartbeat
I’ve lost my way a few times. Always found it again. You will too. If making great work doesn’t energize you then it may be time to find a path out. This business trains you to do many things. But the industry is a roller coaster with cyclical ups and downs. Don’t do anything for the money. Including this
Marry well is all I can say. Seriously.
Yep. For money to support you when it’s time to leave. Unless you have a better escape plan.
It depends on the agency. If I’m at a boring agency, everyday. If I’m somewhere fun, not often
every 6 months or so... 7 years in... im gonna ride the wave while i can
Hard to switch once you are in this trap.
Daily for 25+ years.
Switching to tech soon. People tell me the grass really is greener.
often, my shop has no culture of pushing the envelope. I just want to make good work and not the 20th expected safe strategy
Leave for what? For something easier? Less abusive? With more meaning? Most don’t have the guts or drive to go into business for themselves. Most here would never suck it up and dive into the gig economy to subsidize bills. Most here would never get their hands dirty (in the literal sense) to make a buck. We all want to believe we are so different in this industry in wanting more outta life. But this is life. It’s no less difficult elsewhere, just different.
switched out to the book publishing, distribution and sales as a client relations manager. entered the industry in 2000. left between 2008 and 2015. re-entered in 2015 to 2019.
pretty sure that was my last agency.
I just started in the agency world a couple years ago and I’m already thinking this isn’t what I want to do forever. My hope is to save a lot of the money I make and retire early to do something else part time, or be able to freelance full time.
Furthermore, any day I’ve wanted to leave, it hasn’t been because of *gestures wildly* this. It’s been because the assholes around me are taking themselves way too seriously.
4 years into my career and feeling this way
Every day for the last 8 years
