Ugh. I think it all hinges on whether or not you're currently employed. If you are, then I think you were right to trust your gut - it definitely sounds like something was off. If you're unemployed though, I would've ignored all those red flags just to have a paycheck again.
You were hunting for a job for months can't let them scare you away, can't stand catty nurses with a nasty attitude, makes me sick. Sorry this happened to you. Keep your head up and be confident. I'm a new nurse with a little over a year, I know that feeling when starting a new job and they stare at u in little clicks. Feels like crap. I just stay grounded and I try not to get bamboozled. Oh, and the gossip is ridiculous.
Agreed.
You must be in a privileged position to be turning down a well-paying job in this economy. So congratulations on that. But it does seem like a mistake. Your first impressions of the place could be completely wrong.
I think you were right to trust your gut. I had a similar experience during an interview with a manager. I ignored the signs because I was unemployed. The place was a toxic environment. I am kicking myself now for not listening to my gut.
I have made the mistake before of jumping on the first band wagon I see (i.e. first offer) even if it feels wrong. I've also had a situation where it felt right but they "bamboozled" me by not disclosing information they should have. It sometimes is a crap shoot. I say trust your gut. If other people seem unhappy, there's a reason. If this manager is cutting you off during the interview, they'll continue to do it when you work there. If it feels off, it probably is!

You Will Know....
I would say trust your gut with one caveat. If you don’t have a job, take it but keep looking. I’ve had this experience twice where I didn’t have a job, one came along but I had reservations. I took the jobs for the paycheck but kept looking because the red flags were confirmed within days. In both instances a great job, both of which I stayed in for multiple years, came along within a week or two. I always heard that you are more desirable to a hiring person if you already have a job. This was years ago though, so times may have changed re: that idea. Good luck to you!
