Tell the SM that this new Manager is very interested inncontinuing to support and would really benefit from the SMs continued guidance. Then setup regular update calls with SM and have a very strict agenda.. Say this is what you are going to do and this is what you need their input on. Don't be afraid to push back if they derail the conversation and also setup PMD review meetings so they don't have reasons to change course. All the best!
@D1 if anything I’d argue the SM is the one being passive aggressive. They returned from their leave and had made zero attempts to interact directly with the GTM team that kept things running while the SM was gone. The only reason I know they’re starting to work on sales in our space again is because other people have looped people from the GTM team into email chains with the SM. I’m trying to figure out how to address the issue head on so we clearly define roles according to people’s strengths.
Pro
is the manager you ?
Haha. No. I’m a subject matter expert on the team, and I don’t have the bandwidth to take over as lead.
For some additional context, the SM is the type of person who is more concerned about looking good than doing the work. If things go well, they take the credit. If things go bad, they blame others. They’re trying to make MD, so I do not think they’d respond well to the suggestion that they step aside. I’m trying to find a good solution to make them feel like they’re involved but not actually have them in charge. (Cuz they suck at being in charge.)
Orrrrrrrr..... Y’all could just mind your own business Mr SME or lead the team!
“In the game of thrones, you either win or die. There is no middle ground”
The problem is the SM is running around saying they’re the GTM lead but they’ve made zero attempt to actually work with the GTM team since they returned from their leave. Which makes it particularly awkward for the person who took over while they were on leave (and is doing a much better job than the SM ever did.)
This sounds like a palace coup.
I meant im too junior to offer any advise. Just found this thread interesting. Im sure there are a lot of people with better insight.
What I will warn you tho as a cog in the wheel — if you go for the king you better not miss and you should do it fast. Interoffice gossip and politics spreads fast. You probably know this but there are always people trying to suck up to higher ups and unfortunate as it may be, SM’s have way more clout than M’s.
