To me, a long commute feels like a pay cut because I factor that time into my hours worked. I know that seems silly, but it's always been how my mind works. And 90 minute commute is like an extra 3 hours of working each day. It would be a hard pass for me. I'd max out at 45 minutes each way.
It depends, is it hybrid or does it have potential to be hybrid/ remote over time? I’ve done 1.5 each way, and it’s doable if you can find ways to enjoy the commute or make them productive e.g; download movies or show to watch on your commute that your usually watch when you’re at home so you can use your remaining time when you’re home to do other things without getting to burnt out. For long term, it might not be ideal as it will start to drain you. 90 minutes is the maximum I’d ever commute one way, anymore than that and you’re basically just sleeping and working as all your time is spent commuting
Depending on the salaries and the career growth, I would accept up to 90 minutes total (both ways), not each way. I always do the math to see if it makes sense, my time, the money, and the energy. I use my computer to read books, but if it's not helping with my growth, it doesn't make sense.
The longest commute I ever had was 40 miles each way. I lost a chunk of my life I’ll never get back. I don’t think I’d do anything longer than 45 minutes each way at this point in my life.
I once took a job that on paper was a 40 minute commute. But it could regularly end up taking much longer. Sometimes even around 3 hours each way if there had been an accident. I absolutely hated it and did it for 5 years. Nowadays my maximum commute is zero.
I have done 90 before, it was enough to make me move. I do 45 now (60 if traffic is awful) and have for the past 17 yrs, though it used to be more like 30/35 then.
45 is the best it gets for my city because cost of living is extremely high so living any closer is not financially possible.
But really, everyone has different tolerance. It also can matter if it’s 90 minutes of moving driving or if it’s majority just sitting in traffic crawling at 5mph. Only you can determine if the pay is worth the commute to you.
One thing to consider is that if you’re doing a longer commute, is the pay increased enough not only for that extra gas and time, but also any for any services you may want to hire out to maintain your current life balance. Ex: if you cook from scratch each night, would you want a meal service to make cooking faster and still eat home cooked meals? Would you want a monthly house cleaner to help maintain things you used to do after work regularly? Sometimes hiring out certain tasks can be the difference between balance and overwhelm.
