I’m in house for an insurance company and w no billable hours and make around $175k plus 17.5k bonus. Fully remote.
I’m in big law on the east coast, but my understanding is that our staff attorneys make less than $150k and have the same 2,000-hour expectation that “normal” associates do. And there’s not really any room for upward movement for staff attorneys. Check job postings for positions similar to what you’re considering in cities/states that require salary info in job postings. NYC and Colorado are examples that I think have requirements. They usually include a range, but it might help give you a sense of what to expect in your market.
Staff attorneys are handled very differently from firm to firm and group to group. At some firms, staff attorneys are regularly promoted to associate (based on strong performance/hitting hours), and at others, staff attorney is a career role with zero chance of making it onto partnership track. On the east coast, staff attorney comp is typically between the low to mid $100K range and might include a small bonus (like $10K if hours are hit). Most staff attorneys are expected to bill between 1900 to 2000 hours, but there are exceptions. If you want to make it onto partnership track, ask AFTER an offer is extended if this is a possibility, and then ask to speak to someone currently at the firm who was promoted from SA to associate.
