In this market, referrals don’t seem to matter as much imo. By the time I am able to contact the person and they actually submit the referral I’ve wasted a few days at a minimum. It’s a balance between standing out by applying fast enough and getting a referral.
Totally get that. Timing matters. A quick apply plus a referral coming in shortly after can still strengthen the application without slowing you down.
I think it depends on company. I think a referral link is not that big of a deal. However, a personal email to the hiring manager to give a referral is big.
Fair point. A referral link is low effort, while a personal note carries more weight. Both help, just at different levels of signal depending on the company.
That’s a great example. Warm referrals remove friction and build trust early, which often makes the process smoother for everyone involved.

This resonates. I used to think asking for a referral felt like cheating—but it’s not. It’s context. It signals intention. And most people want to help if it’s easy and respectful. A thoughtful message isn’t a burden—it’s a bridge.
