The California exodus is typically Washington or Texas. Washington if you like the mild climate, forests and mountains and don't mind rain, Texas if you like the hot summers, desert atmosphere and don't mind rain. Housing prices are higher in Washington particularly in Seattle, but if you can live outside the city and get internet hooked up it's much more affordable.
Washington is probably more likely to have higher taxes in the future given the political climate, but Texas is also going bluer so who knows.
Thank you. I wonder which state will have faster appreciation in property value
I’d wait it out and see if your remote position is truly here to stay
Tennessee is actually growing really fast. But Washington is closer and not as hot.
Correct me if I am wrong, if you work for a California employer or coded to a California office, even if you reside in Texas, you are still subject to income tax on salaries sourcing in Cali (which is all of your salary),? That is what happened to me this year. I changed address and got a TX driver license but California still tax my salary since I am coded to a California office.
The problem is that some states payroll withholding rules require employers to withhold on your earnings even though you may ultimately file your own individual return with no state source income. The withholding rules are not always consistent with the personal income tax sourcing rules.
