That dude is hilariously on point!
Le sigh. I’m 1000% not here to be a McKinsey defender (I’m currently in tech and worked at ACN, never MBB). But the problems he described are relevant to the entire consulting industry, not just McKinsey. McKinsey definitely made some bad decisions with very negative consequences, but are the other consulting firms fundamentally very different? Or did they just not have as many high profile mess-ups?
I’ve also been watching John Oliver for years and he’a talented comedian, but I think I’m a bit tired of his approaches in this context. He talks about a subject for 20 minutes and gets very angry, but in the end this amounts to nothing. The viewer doesn’t get a comprehensive view of the subject because 20 minutes is never enough and when the episode ends, that’s it. Everyone nods and moves on. 🤷🏻♀️ I know a comedy show host can’t be expected to deliver PhD-level analysis, but with the current structure I always end up thinking “what’s the point?”
I know, I saw it. It still goes hard on McKinsey tho. Maybe I get that impression because of the accumulation of this piece plus all the bad press McKinsey specifically has been getting.
Oliver is an ideological hack. I don’t trust him any more than McKinsey.
Watched the first 5 minutes of that video and it’s awful. 1. It’s completely unfunny, which is odd for a comedy show 2. It’s so obviously selective and biased as to be ridiculous. Oliver is terrible.
Confirmed everything I thought I knew about McKinsey. Link for reference: https://youtube.com/watch?v=AiOUojVd6xQ&si=qM-jgtaej89BWK_k
Just watched it - AMAZING
This post accurately describes a lot of Fox News content as well. In terms of media I agree this isn’t the best way to really learn about any topics.
That episode was very satisfying to watch and cathartic. Working with a smaller consulting firm at the moment and they have zero clue how to design a product. They borrow design thinking and product management techniques yet fundamentally can’t get past analysis paralysis and over complicating processes. It’s been so unproductive and mentally draining to work with these left brained “know-it-alls”. No offense to anyone in the industry who has common sense and awareness. 🙂 The systemic approach of MBAs swooping in to save the day is doing more damage than good for those businesses that believe their money is paying for real results.
The Corporate Gossip podcast has an amazing episode on McKinsey also.
Agree to disagree
John Oliver is completely unfunny. His act is an 80 IQ left wing rant where the joke is to watch a socially awkward British nerd - who is supposed to come off as square and polite - become increasingly enraged until he's nearly foaming. That's the whole act. Over and over. He could be talking about Palestine or tampons. It's a mad-lib that he performs every night.
Also, McKinsey can go to hell, but only an idiot needs John Oliver to tell them to think that. Ooo... cutting edge journalism! Only in an idiocracy.
Are they all empty talking points, don’t they need to support with real data for each claim? (Whether the interpretation is correct is another issue)
Is healthcare also under strategy consulting?
Personally I think the problem might be that they need to focus efforts on where they can really a better impact.
Not a mgt consulting defender, but they have some value, which is why they get repeat customers. I think the holier than thou attitude needed a reality check and JO did a good job with that
