As a leader, I would be livid that you wasted your time doing this instead of creating something revenue-generating. It also shows lack of empathy- you have no idea what goes on in their lives.
If you aren’t a manager or supervisor of those employees it is not your problem and you need to stay in your lane. Lackeys are not valued employees
Fast way to get stuffed into your locker
Pro
So true... is there such a thing as a virtual locker
It would certainly not boost your popularity. Not your place to monitor and snitch on your coworkers, you don’t have the full context of their situations. Leave it to their managers.
Fast way to get promoted to office narc. Why bother? If you can use those skills to create something more beneficial for the company, it would be better to use your talent for that. Leave employee tracking to HR.
Rising Star
Lol this can't be a real question. If you want to get promoted, just work a bit harder and more visibly than those people. They are doing you a favor. Nobody likes a narc.
EVEN bosses don't like snitches, because THEY worry you might snitch on THEM too... Cutting your nose off to spite your face...
I know this is a troll, but I would absolutely love to see how long this request stays in the security teams queue.
Pro
I get the urge to stand out early on, but this might not be the way. A tool like that could erode trust fast, even if your intent is to help. Maybe ask your manager what challenges they'd love to solve instead?
Is this r/AITA?
The fastest way to get promoted would be to just keep focused on your job and do your work the best you can. If people are doing that then hard work should garner a promotion pretty easily.
You may - *MAY* - have a point but it's not your job to monitor the work habits of your co-workers, especially since you say you're "a junior" at your company.
The possible exception is if these absences begin to actually impact your ability to get your work done. Documentation of such instances would be warranted but you would also need to be extreeemely careful in how you present this information because it could easily come across as unprofessional.
You're also making an assumption that no one above the people you've noted as coming in late and leaving early aren't aware of that as well. If those senior employees aren't saying or doing anything - and stuff like this does make it through the office grapevine - than pointing out others' comings and goings would reflect poorly on you and, as Director 1 pointed out, likely piss off a lot of people because you've demonstrated you're more concerned with what others are doing instead of concentrating on your job.
I didn't realize people have such terrible work ethic. All the more reason that we need more stuff like DOGE
You just wrote this for the clout :))) Are you a marketer in disguise? :)))
Low value. Think of something that will increase revenue. That will get CEO’s attention.
What a real sneaky person you are
Even if it was great, how would they promote you? Typically it would be announced that person x did y kind of work which means that they'd publicize they're going to monitor everyone for their use of Slack. That won't go over well for the company or you. There'd be backlash and you'd probably never get any response when you communicate with others and your career trajectory will stop.
that's their next problem and solution: developing an ML tool to detect when colleagues are leaving them on read! surely this must be useful for somebody...
You Don’t want to be that guy !!
Rat behavior.
I've mostly read through the comments and agree with them. The one thing that I'd add is that if you show yourself to be a useful minion to management, they will think of you as a useful minion and not as a leader. In fact the resentment that you generate among your coworkers will convince leadership that you are not a leader. When hiring internally for leadership roles, there is a tendency, in my opinion, to promote someone with influence on your coworkers that they no longer feel that they have. So your plan is counter to your goals. Just my opinion.
This is already being done at your place of work. If you have security/pass/swipe cards to get into the building, the employees , every one of them, is being tracked by the RF chips in the card. Whether they swipe or not exiting as a group. Everyone entering or exiting a barrier parking lot as well. Wifi/Bluetooth on your phone? Yup, tracking you. All these apps are in place so if management wants to track you they can. Re-inventing the wheel makes you look like an Stasi *ss.
hilariously bad idea
No, you'll get death threats from your co-workers. Furthermore, you need to focus on what you can do to create value - without tearing apart your peers.
A promotion? I guess, if you work for the Stasi.
I think you should focus on your tasks and supporting people, not creating tools that measure how well people size up to your standards and adhere to your habits.
Do not create the torment nexus.
