I'd stick it out. You'll be up a level both in seniority and pay. Conventional wisdom holds that exit opps are most attractive at manager. At SM/director there are far fewer exits as you are too expensive for most roles. As an SC there are too many of you floating around to really good value and to the above point you haven't proven that you are a successful consultant.
Guys - my two cents...
I think this all depends on the how willing the company is and how you fare at the group/company. I think you would be the best judge for this. Many of my colleagues have made the move at SA1 or SA2 and have been managers or manager levels outside of consulting.
I was in the same situation where I decided to stick out for the promo and had a small fall out with a director not in my group during the last 2 months of performance year end and my entire year was done....Decided to stick out again due to RPs strong backing and very strong year in terms of utilization and reinvestment work. Come March we went pencils down on a project supposed to go on until May. Utilization fell 5 points below the required mark and no promo....6 months later a layoff...Currently with a smaller consulting firm as Manager with a pay greater than what I would have had at a Big4. Point here is I would strongly encourage to look around and if pay and recognition is provided...do it.
I think it's worth it to stick it out for promotion. The promotion indicates you were a successful consultant and that you would be successful in other roles.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't look around though. The right opportunity can always come along before you're a manager.
Thanks guys... This all makes sense! I'm going to stick around for now, and maybe try to accelerate up to manager.
I will start looking casually, but it makes sense that getting promoted well lead to better opportunities down the road
While I generally agree to wait until M, it also depends on the job market. The market is still pretty hot at the moment...who knows what 12 or 18 months will bring, so keep that in mind. If something great comes along, screw the promo and take it now. Otherwise, stick it out.
Stay for the year. Switching means you’ll start with all the sr assoc at the new place in the run for manager
