Rising Star
San Diego is fantastic but LA is better. Even inspite of all of its problems such as COL, homelessness etc.
The cultural diversity, food, vibrancy, colors and variety of LA simply cannot be compared with.
Much larger European expat population too, if at all that is an important consideration.
maybe less traffic in sd but not sure if it's safer. sd is the play though. much more mellow and real people
Pro
SD isn’t significantly better than LA on all those metrics. It’s still the 6th largest city in the US and would be indistinguishable from the LA/Orange County sprawl if not for a massive empty military base that separates them. It has all the big city and coastal CA cost of living problems.
Also, San Diego is far more conservative (very large active-duty military population who mostly come from conservative areas of the country) and less culturally diverse. That might matter for a European since the US as a whole is already more conservative than Europe.
Look into beach towns like Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad and suburban living in Carmel Valley. Very chill, great food options, and a very convenient train option (surf liner) to get to DTLA (with stops in OC). While I haven’t met too many foreigners here, the Americans here seem more chill in general (I’m a foreigner). It doesn’t have the bustle of a big city but downtown SD is only 30 mins away on weekend evenings if you want to enjoy a night out!
