I would wear braids until it grew back
Guuurrrrllll. ROCK YOUR FRO!!!! Your confidence and joy will shine through.
So. I’ve been there (major illness- lots of hair loss and had to cut to almost bald)
When I couldn’t muster the self confidence, I did wigs and scarves until my hair grew back.
Take advantage of COVID (😩) times and cut for healthier hair long term.
Breathe.
A big chop is a time to really get to know your hair. How it reacts. How it responds to curls. You can color it, gel it etc. In fact many many women big chop more than once because they didn't really enjoy the experience the first time around.
Second, men are attracted to CONFIDENCE. I've had short hair, no hair, long hair etc. Men respond well to women who think they are beautiful. Shoot I got picked up by a man while wearing my wedding ring, a mask and bonnet because he said my eyes smiled lol.
My girl has been rocking less than an inch if hair for thr last three years and I promise she has no lack of suitors.
There are tons of YouTube videos out there on big chopping and how really get into your hair.
I suggest you make it part of your growth. Do it on a new moon. Journal about your feelings your joy, your fears, how your hair feels etc.
Have you tried twist and curls? It is basically a twist out with perm rods on the ends. Depending on your hair type, this could work while you grow the heat damage out.
Try clip ins to help get use to it and give you length and volume
I understand the trepidation about the big chop... when I did it, it was the most freeing experience I’d ever had regarding my hair. I’d never had short hair before and I was worried, but had so much fun with it.
I agree with DBM 1, men are attracted to confidence. The experience will be a chance for you to learn what you like, products wise and look wise. You’ll also probably find your hair will grow a lot faster than you expected.
If you're really not comfortable with it, maybe try wigs, weaves, braids etc. I wore mostly wigs for 5 years after I stopped relaxing. I used to very occasionally rock a wash and go to see family and friends or to the gym, but It took covid for me to finally be comfortable wearing my natural hair to work. I always thought it was silly to have natural hair and barely every show it. It just took me some time to get comfortable. Plus I feel like there has been a ton more support for natural hair in recent years, both from the black community and from without too.
At the end of the day, do what makes you feel comfortable!
