Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Dude, read your lease. Some leases will allow a lease take over or a sublet. None of us can really answer this for you
Good ideas. However what about the free rent promo payback? I don’t think any tenant would willingly agree to pay that back and it’s risky if I assume the risk of them leaving. I guess I’d just have to set aside $5000 in case they do.
And some states a landlord has to try and release your spot and can only collect for months it was empty. Check your lease and you state laws. Also check to see if the free rent was prorated for repayment. I doubt they will let you out of repaying it, no one you get to,sublet is going to take over that responsibility ( ie pay it if they move out). Has the markets changed since you signed? Find out what their current rent rate is. If they have gone up, they may be happy to just let you out and be able to release it for more. Rates have dropped? No way they are letting you walk.
Good points. It’s more like if I find someone to sublet and who can pass through the corporation’s screening process would just start paying and accept no rent promos so it’s essentially as if I just stayed and paid anyway, in the eyes of the landlord and their pockets.
EDIT: you mentioned if they move out… yeah that’s tough because it essentially would have to be a 2 year term for them as well.
Talk to the landlord. They might ask for a concession but never turn down a deal
Look up the reasons you can legally break a lease in your state. See if any apply. Use as leverage to break lease.
OK well there other reasons to break it. That was an example of one.
There may be an option to add a roommate, wait a period, then drop your name from the lease. This comes with a fair amount of risk in that you’re still liable for the rent if anything happens with the new roommate.
That’s true. I heard about that strategy of finding someone to add to your lease who will essentially be your “roommate” or “you got a girl girlfriend”. I wonder if anyone would be comfortable with knowing that though.
If you pay the fine, can they not hit your credit in return? Work something out or find a replacement.

Are you going to find a job back home?
Potentially. Home is a major city (think NYC, SF) and there’s more jobs there. But that doesn’t mean I can’t find a remote job, it’s just more likely I find a hybrid job in my home city.
I moved to a LCOL city when I had my old remote job for context.
Edit: I’d still be in the US, didn’t mean for my post to sound like I am going back home abroad.
The cleanest route is to pay the lease break clause. It’s typically 60 day notice + 2 month penalty + rent concession pay back. If you go another route like finding a sublet, be ready to offer your own offer to the new person equal to the rent concession you received or more. Last bit is because your rent is likely higher than market rate without the concession.
