Let's say you're a 5th year and your new firm recognizes 6th years as senior associates. The senior associate title is on the website. I'm about to pass my 5th year anniversary, making me a 6th year. Do firms make that change in real time or at the beginning of the next billable year?

This is firm specific, you should ask someone at your firm

like

If it's anything like my firm, all title changes are effective Jan. 1. But you really have to ask - if you're a 5th year and don't have anyone you feel comfortable asking this, you have bigger problems.

like

Then ask. Seems like you’ll fall through the cracks without asking.

It’s whenever your firm adjusts their consideration of you, so look to when your salary has gone up (the more typical answer is that usually class promotions start as of Jan 1).

Who cares?

Do they list you on the website as a “junior associate” “senior associate” as your job title? That’s kind of odd if they do. But if they do, I’d ask to have your little changed to reflect your experience.

At my firm title changes and salary increases happen in June.

If you have a friend or fellow law school alumni say you’d love to take them to lunch to ask some getting the lay of the land questions. Ask this and other questions that are sure to come up in your first few weeks.

Is anyone in the Tac group?

Hey BA friends! I work at a small agency and we’re doing a shoot end of the month. Normally all of our production insurance is covered by liners but for some reason this shoot clients are asking to see our production insurance policy, which we don’t have. Is this something every agency should have? I’ve either had client or production cover so not 100% sure on this! US based company. Shoot is oversees.

Thoughts on sending out assignments over the weekend? I work a lot on weekends, but I don’t expect associates too. But, because I work on weekends, I often will send out assignments by email with a clear indication in subject line and body that it does not need to be completed or worked on over the weekend. A friend recently mentioned this isn’t the best since seeing the assignment may create unnecessary stress and anxiety. So, what say you? Am I terrible partner?

Does anyone enjoy lender work? If so, what about it did you find appealing? Transactional junior associate in biglaw. Working for a dedicated practice group rather than in an associate pool. For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time. While the people are decent and the hours aren’t terrible, I detest the work and don’t see a future in this new practice. My main partner says it should end in the next month, but I don’t expect that to happen. Is it a terrible idea to ask to be taken off?

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
