Certificates help you with understanding the job profile and the skills expectations. They don’t generally offer placements. If you are lucky, you might get a call as an associate PM which is entry level profile.
What is generally recommended for transition is,
- Transition to program manager and then move to product management with these certifications. It works. Worked for me.
- or shadow a PM internally and then make a transition. It will be a lateral move so you don’t have to cut on your salary and level.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Seems like I was shooting for the sky by applying to PM openings so far. Your guidance really helps.
I have seen certifications/courses that cost a lot. I don't want to spend huge amount of money. I came across some LinkedIn learnings for PMs, which also have certificate after an exam. I found two so far:
1. International institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). Not exactly a certificate, but heps in CBAP and CCBA.
2. Aha! Product Management Professional Certificate
I can go through LinkedIn learning from employer, so I see no cost burden. Is it worth the efforts to do these? Or do I spend money and channel all my efforts someplace else?
CBAP will not help much in getting into PM role. BA and PM are distinct roles. Online courses can give you basic understanding about the field and the role but getting job from them is not guaranteed. I had done one such course in past.
I would recommend to read book called 'Inspired' and try to relate it your current job.
