Looking to lateral to California to be closer to family. Will every firm force me to take the CA Bar? If so, will they give time to study/billable credit or will they require already being barred in CA? Transactional attorney, 5 YOE and UBE bar passed, in case relevant.

Depends on the firm, but most will give you time to study and mine gives a bit of a stipend.

Yes you’ll need to pass the bar. Whether you’ll get a stipend depends on the firm. Haven’t heard of any firm giving billable credit but my firm gave people a couple weeks’ paid leave and their hours requirements were prorated accordingly.

When I transferred to a California office within the same firm, I got 4 weeks paid time off to study. I took 2 additional unpaid weeks to be safe though in hindsight 4 weeks would have been plenty

probably. i work in house and they forced me to get registered in house

Yes, you will need to get CA qualified. Whether you take July or Feb bar depends on timing of your start date at new firm. If we are talking BigLaw, they will pay for your bar exam expenses and review course. Feel free to DM me.

Thanks for all of the info! Excited to take another bar in the near future😅

Yes you will need to take the CA bar. But note since you have practiced for 4+ years you can take the attorney’s exam. This is the one day CA portion of the exam, which is precisely what I did.

I got 4 weeks from my firm and that was sufficient. And correct, just essays.

Yes they’ll make you take the bar, but they will likely give you time to study (a couple weeks nothing crazy)

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

I’ve made it 5+ years in a NY M&A practice and have consistent exceeding expectations reviews. I’ve had a few mental breakdowns because of work during this time, but thankfully made it through. I’ve been in a near constant depressive/anxious state for family reasons for the last year and half, and am soon having my first kid. I’m scared shitless that I’ll spiral out of control both at work and at home if something doesn’t change soon. Any suggestions on how to keep this job and keep it together?

To those at V25 firms, how do you view your London office in terms of the quality of work we get and overall importance to the firm? Like is there a perception of us being a step down or ancillary to the big leagues of NYC or not? There’s generally a perception here that L&W and K&E are the only US firms where London can even begin to compete with stateside in terms of generating l work organically but would be interesting to know what you all think? Be brutally honest.

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. For those at free market firms, how frequently do you have to ask for work? How do you typically ask? Just send partners emails asking if they have any deals for you? Thanks y’all.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Why do many associates at top tier firms stay to make Partner when they can go in-house in tech and make around the same, even long term? For example, you can make near 400-550k in-house at Google, Netflix, FB with 8-10 years of exp. More senior than that in-house, it can easily break $1M.
