In my experience, those who embrace the “Jesus gets you” message at the surface level often don’t want to acknowledge that Jesus also tells us to take up our cross and follow Him. Carry a burden. Live morally.
At some point people need to understand that Christianity is about following Jesus…not about Jesus following you. Plus, some of them are just plain inaccurate (e.g., Jesus was not a refugee like the one commercial claims) and try to mold Biblical stories/truths into current social justice narratives.
I didn’t like the commercial much. But Jesus WAS a refugee, fleeing to Egypt due to Herod’s persecution.
We need a message of hope and I thought it was very timely
I struggle with the message, because it’s not about Him getting us, but rather us “getting” Him. Said differently, we don’t go to Christ to be affirmed for who we are. Rather, we are changed because of what Christ did fit us on the cross. We turn away from sin and sacrifice the flesh daily.
Now, I do believe the part about welcoming/loving immigrants is another important too, as in 1 Peter we are called to be hospitable to friends and strangers alike.
Yes, the perspective you have is fantastic and what I would hope EVERYONE hears. Call me a pessimist, but our culture is so strongly championing “be your authentic self” and worshipping self that I feel more people than not would fall into the latter category.
It did the one job advertising hopes for .. discussion and awareness. No one is going to find Jesus in a TV ad, but the search could provide the answer.
Bingo
Any light in a dark place can be just the hope some need to wake up from their slumber and awake to chase after righteousness.
Jesus does get us…..He knows we are all wretched sinners in need of a Savior. What’s lost in that commercial and on the website is the gospel. Love the idea of a Jesus commercial but man did they fumble the ball at the goal line.
